Modeling of the dynamics of viruses in vivo, for example during primary infection or following drug treatment, has been used in the last two decades to study the biology of diverse viruses. I will discuss, with examples from HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, the principles and approach of this methodology. I will also present recent examples of insights into the biology of these viruses gained with viral dynamics.
