The Johns Hopkins CFAR joins the global HIV community in mourning the death of Mark Wainberg last Tuesday. Mark was a superb scientist who became an AIDS activist during his tenure as President of the International AIDS Society. By placing the 2000 International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, Mark and the IAS leadership drew attention to the tragedy unfolding in Sub-Saharan Africa, with millions of people with HIV unable to obtain treatment. He also confronted anti-scientific attitudes and policies of the South African government and other world leaders who contributed to AIDS denialism. At the time of his death Mark was serving as Editor in Chief of the Journal of the International AIDS Society (JIAS). We salute his numerous scientific, social, and political contributions and offer our condolences to his family and many friends.
