The Criminal Legal Involvement and Health Scientific Working Group serves as a nidus for collaboration and idea exchange, growing research, policy, advocacy, and clinical care.
The prevalence of HIV among people in prisons and jails is 5-10-fold higher than the general population in the United States. In the weeks to months following release from prison or jail, the risk of HIV acquisition is 6-20-fold higher than a similar non-returning population. The high levels of social and economic marginalization, HIV prevalence, and high risk of HIV acquisition after release make it essential to consider people with criminal legal involvement in efforts to end the HIV epidemic and to improve their overall health.
