Characterizing peripheral and tissue reservoirs in South African males living with HIV
Sherazaan is a Senior Scientist in the Infectious Diseases Research Group at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Cape Town, South Africa. Sher completed her postgraduate studies at the University of Cape Town starting with characterization of transmitted-founder HIV and later in HIV latent reservoir studies. Her Ph.D. explored the role of T cell activation and inflammation on the frequency of latently infected cells in South African women on therapy.
Through the CFAR Africure award, Sherazaan will be initiating research comparing the HIV latent reservoir in circulation to that in the foreskin tissue of men living with HIV, and elucidating host and viral factors associated with persistence, particularly in African populations.
