The Center for AIDS Research is pleased to announce that Charles Holmes, MD, MPH, has joined the faculty of the School of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases as of February 1, 2015. Dr. Holmes is Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ), based in Lusaka, and will remain in that post in addition to joining the ID Division and CFAR as an HIV implementation science expert.
Dr. Holmes trained in internal medicine and infectious disease at Massachusetts General Hospital and subsequently joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He then went on to serve in leadership positions in the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC) for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) during both the Bush and Obama administrations (2008 – 2012), where he was founding Director of the Office of Research and Science, and later Chief Medical Officer and Deputy U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator. Dr. Holmes is internationally recognized for his work on strategies to expand access to antiretroviral treatment and PMTCT services and the integration of evolving science into policy, and has served on numerous WHO and other advisory and guidelines committees. In his current role, he directs an organization of over 1000 people with an annual budget of $35 million, serving Zambians with innovative research, training and service delivery programs in HIV, tuberculosis, maternal-child health, childhood vaccines and other areas. His multi-disciplinary research group is focused on large-scale strategies to improve information for public health decision-making and the development of more effective and efficient models of healthcare delivery.
Dr. Holmes will spend most of his time in Zambia, and will work with the CFAR Implementation Science Scientific Working Group, as well as serve as an attending physician on the Infectious Disease Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
