It is with tremendous pride and excitement, mixed with sadness, that the Johns Hopkins CFAR announces that Chris Beyrer, MD, MPH, CFAR Co-Director and Desmond Tutu Professor of Health and Human Rights, has accepted the position of Director of the Duke Global Health Institute at Duke University. Chris has served as Co-Director of the CFAR since its re-inception in 2012 and has led the Developmental Core, providing mentoring and pilot funding to dozens of early stage investigators, many of whom have gone on to independent research careers. Chris is a world-renowned investigator and advocate for pursuing human rights as a fundamental component of health and has led numerous studies on HIV prevention, stigma, access to care, and policy. Over the past 2 years he has been a leading figure in the COVID-19 response, combining fierce advocacy for those most at risk and cutting edge research on vaccines and prevention.
Chris’ contributions to HIV research, the CFAR, the training of new investigators, and global health equity and justice are too numerous to enumerate here. He has been a wonderful collaborator and friend and will be sorely missed. We wish him the best as he pursues this exciting new opportunity, and we look forward to continued collaboration with this true giant of public health.
