On Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3rd the CFAR’s Baltimore HIV Collaboratory and the Center for Black Equity hosted Sankofa: Community Conversations on Black Men Who Sex With Men (MSM) in Central Maryland. The event brought together health care and service providers, clinicians, and social workers to better understand the lives of Black gay and bisexual men not just from the standpoint of HIV/AIDS infection and the related stigma, but as individuals who want the tools to build stronger and healthier lives. The meeting also provided a variety of life skills workshops and resources aimed at assisting young men such as building healthy relationships, developing financial literacy and job preparedness. The Office of the Mayor presented a Certificate of Recognition for both groups commitment to educate the community and uplift those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS in Baltimore City. Several organizations worked in collaboration to make the event possible including amfAR, the American Psychological Association and the National Black Gay Men’s Advocacy Coalition.
