Patient and stakeholder perspectives on HIV cure research in Ghana
Dr. Helena Lamptey is a Senior Research Fellow in the Immunology Department at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, University of Ghana. Her expertise spans Public Health, Immunology, Epidemiology, Virology, and Molecular Biology. She holds a Doctorate in Public Health from the University of Ghana's School of Public Health. As an early-career scientist with a strong foundation in malaria research, Dr. Lamptey is expanding her focus to investigate the immunology of HIV and hepatitis. She is currently part of the HIV Cure Infrastructure Study Team (H-CRIS).
Dr. Lamptey's goal is to conduct translational research into T cell immune mechanisms that influence infection risk, viral persistence, and immunological biomarkers related to latency in HIV and viral hepatitis, particularly in the African context, where much remains unknown. She is particularly passionate about extending this research among children and adolescents living with HIV in Ghana—a critical gap in HIV cure research in Africa. Additionally, Dr. Lamptey is deeply interested in translational science in HIV cure research, recognizing the need to integrate biomedical science with social and implementation sciences as efforts to find an HIV cure progress.
For the 2025 AFRICURE Developmental Awards, her focus is to use novel implementation science methods to determine the preferences of PWH on HIV cure methods and trial interventions. This is important because their perspectives and preferences are critical to inform the design of cure therapies as well as cure trials.
