Dr. Fred Kyeyune is a molecular virologist and senior research scientist with over 15 years of experience studying the evolution of HIV at the CFAR Laboratory at Joint Clinical Research Centre in Uganda. His work spans interdisciplinary research projects that explore HIV-1 subtype dynamics, HIV drug resistance, and viral reservoirs. In addition to his research, Dr. Kyeyune is a passionate educator and mentor, dedicated to training the next generation of virologists and clinical researchers in Uganda and beyond.

As part of the CFAR Africure project, Dr. Kyeyune investigates the role of HIV-1 subtypes in sustaining latent reservoirs in people living with HIV (PLHIV), with a focus on individuals infected with non-B subtypes who experience persistent low-level viremia despite optimal treatment adherence. These populations, often classified as virally suppressed, continue to release virus into circulation thereby posing critical challenges for HIV cure strategies. His work is pivotal in advancing global understanding of HIV persistence and informing targeted approaches toward achieving a functional cure for HIV.
