Allison Agwu, M.D., ScM is Associate Professor of Adult and Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Agwu graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1999 and completed a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatric Residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland/Rainbow Babies and Children's in Cleveland, Ohio in 2003. She then matriculated as the first combined adult/pediatric infectious diseases fellow at Johns Hopkins, which she completed in 2007. She came on faculty in 2007 with a primary appointment in pediatric infectious diseases and a secondary appointment in adult infectious diseases. Dr. Agwu's clinical and research interest is in HIV/AIDS and she has a special focus on adolescent and young adults with this infection. Dr. Agwu sees patients both in the pediatric and adult HIV clinics and has been integral to the transition of pediatric HIV infected patients to adult care, leading the Accessing Care Early (ACE) Youth/Young Adult Transition Clinic. From a research perspective, Dr. Agwu is very interested in health disparities for youth with HIV infection as well as deciphering optimal treatment strategies for this population. Toward this aim, she has her own independent research projects where she utilizes multimodal research approaches (secondary data analyses of large clinical cohorts, primary data collection through qualitative methods, and development and management of clinical trials through clinical trials’ networks). Additionally, Dr. Agwu is also the Principal Investigator of the Johns Hopkins sites of the International Maternal Pediatric and Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials' (IMPAACT) and Adolescent Trials Network (ATN). She serves on several IMPAACT & ATN committees and on the Department of Health and Human Services’ Pediatric Antiretroviral Treatment Guidelines.
