Dr. Cui Yang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Behavior and Society (HBS) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHBSPH). Her research draws from multi-disciplinary perspectives to understand and intervene social and structural factors associated with different health outcomes, with particular emphasis on issues related to substance use, HIV, and mental health in both domestic and international settings. Dr. Yang is the Principal Investigator of a 5-year K99/R00 grant from the National Institute of Health to purse these interests. She is developing mHealth intervention to promote alcohol risk reduction and improve HIV medical adherence with African American men who have sex with men (MSM) in Baltimore. This project uses smartphones to collect ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and GPS data on social and structural environments of alcohol use and HIV medication adhernece and deliver ecological momentary intervention(EMI) messages with personalized feedback. In addition to her domestic work, she has worked on several international projects in China and India. Most recently, she was the Project Director of NIH-funded social epidemiology study of HIV/STD and related risk behaviors in men who are clients of female sex workers in China. In this study, she evaluated the prevalence of HIV, syphilis and HCV and explored the social network factors surrounding commercial sex visits. Dr. Yang teaches a graduate level course on social network analysis in public health program.
