Biography

Tonia Poteat is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her research, teaching, and practice focus on HIV and LGBT health with particular attention to transgender health disparities. She completed her doctoral dissertation on stigma and access to health care for transgender people in Baltimore, co-authored a recent meta-analysis examining the burden of HIV among transgender women worldwide, and is lead author of an article on HIV among transgender sex workers in The Lancet HIV and Sex Workers series. She is currently supported by the JHU CFAR to conduct a study of HIV vulnerability among transgender women of color in Baltimore toward the goal of developing feasible and acceptable community-based HIV prevention interventions. In addition to her academic work, Dr. Poteat provides medical care for people living with HIV in the Moore Clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
